Pericallis
Pericallis x hybrida, commonly known as Cineraria, or florist cineraria, is a flowering plant in the daisy family. Cinerarias come in a variety of beautiful coloured and bi-coloured blooms, that are a big hit in the Spring. Cineraria thrive in cooler climate and prefer partial light.
Cineraria are not safe for human or animal consumption.
Light | Light shade or full sun |
Water | Ensure soil is moist and well-drained |
Temperature | Sensitive to heat. Use full sun in the winter, but partial shade in the summer is a must. |
The Florist Cineraria was first developed in the British Royal Gardens in 1777. It originated as a hybrid between Pericallis cruenta and P.Ianata, both natives of the Canary Islands.
Cineraria thrive in full to partial sun, depending on the time of year. To maintain the quality of your Cineraria, ensure the soil is slightly moist. They are heat-sensitive and prefer cooler temperatures.
Once in bloom, Cinerarias can last between 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately, Cinerarias will not bloom again. They are an annual plant and only flower once in their lifespan.
Cineraria are very easy to grow and maintain. One of the special features of the cineraria plant is that it is a natural attractant to butterflies!
